About the Gallery

Mission

The purpose of the UConn Stamford Art Gallery is to support the University’s educational mission by stimulating active learning and dialogue about the arts and the creative process. In fact, Faculty members have brought their classes into the gallery as a means of incorporating an exhibit into their course’s curriculum. The gallery offers visitors a welcoming environment, which attracts regional artists and community members to a high caliber exhibitions and programs.

The Gallery is a large, inviting space located off the Main Concourse, which serves as the heart of the campus, located in downtown Stamford, with easy access to parking and public transportation. Visitors enter the Gallery from the Concourse or from a second entrance that is visible from Washington Boulevard and lit by a dramatic three-story light spine. The Gallery is approximately 25 feet wide by 70 feet long.

UConn Stamford Gallery showcases both emerging and established artists, with a special emphasis on the works and themes of traditionally underrepresented groups, local/regional artists, interdisciplinary artworks, and diverse mediums and perspectives (see the Archive for examples of past exhibitions).

Gallery operations

The Gallery is governed by an Advisory Board comprised of individuals from the UConn and arts communities. The Board selects artists, groups, and collections for exhibition on a rolling basis. The Gallery hosts approximately eight shows per year, including an annual juried photography show, one or more group shows by local guilds or artist collectives, themed exhibits, and solo shows. Special emphasis on the works and themes of traditionally underrepresented groups, local/regional artists, interdisciplinary artworks, and diverse mediums and perspectives.

Please be aware that artists are responsible for the installation & de-installation of their exhibition. This includes all labor involved in hanging, setup and take down. The artist must bring their own ladder, hammers and hardware, i.e., hooks & nails.  A new wire hanging system has been installed on the east side of the gallery to preserve gallery’s wall and for the convenience of the Artist.

Call to Artists

In addition to calls for particular shows and selected invitations, there is a general Open Call to Artists who wish to submit their works for consideration. Shows are typically booked one year or more in advance. Please be aware that the university no longer permits exhibiting artists to sell their art works while in the art gallery.

Donations

Proposed donations of  fine art by past exhibitors are welcome.  The exposure of fine art is an essential component of a truly well rounded collegiate experience. We strive to maintain a permanent and conspicuous collection throughout our lounges, offices and public areas. The Art Gallery Board judges the acceptability of each donation.
